Siblings Find Comfort and Connection at Morningside of Fullerton
Morningside of Fullerton residents often witness the beauty of the community, but sometimes, the most heartwarming stories are those of families reconnecting. That is exactly what happened with three siblings: John Phelps, 87, Louise Phelps Shamblen, 85, and Carol Phelps, 80, who now all call the Orange County community home. Their story is closely linked to the history of Fullerton itself and to the very origins of Morningside of Fullerton.
A Family’s Legacy That Spans Generations
The Phelps family’s connection to Morningside dates back to its grand opening in 1991. Wilson Phelps and his wife rode in the very first car to enter the gates of the new retirement community. Impressively, his brother and sister soon joined them, establishing an early Phelps presence here. Now, that legacy lives on through Wilson’s children.
John and Louise live across the street from one another in single-story villas, while their younger sister, Carol, resides just a short walk on the 33-acre campus.
“I think we’re fortunate in that we’re very compatible,” John said during an interview with the Orange County Register in the spring of 2025.
Their experience illustrates the findings of a 2020 study highlighted in the Journal of Family Theory & Review, which suggests that close sibling relationships in older adulthood are linked to reduced loneliness and depression, as well as improved emotional well-being. The Phelps siblings are a true testament to this and demonstrate why so many Orange County families are choosing to call Morningside home for future generations.
Louise was the first of the trio to move to Morningside in 2013. Ten years later, John moved to Morningside of Fullerton. Carol was the most recent to join in 2024.
Their decision to move into Morningside allows them to spend quality time together while maintaining their individual lives. They even extend their care to each other’s furry companions, with Louise often “cat-sits” for Carol.
Growing up in Fullerton, the siblings all attended Fullerton Union High School. Their paths led them to diverse careers: Louise as an elementary school teacher, Carol as a social worker, probation officer, and holistic health center owner, and John in commercial property management.
For John and his wife, the decision to move to Morningside was partly about simplifying life.
“As you get older, being social and being around people is important,” he noted. This desire for connection is clearly fulfilled by having his sisters nearby.
Beyond their familial bond, the Phelps siblings are deeply engaged in giving back to their community. In 2011, they received a Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award for their charitable work.
Here at Morningside, Louise shares her artistic talents by teaching art classes, while John and Carol volunteer at a therapeutic equine riding center. All three also collaborate on their family foundation.
Reflecting on their closeness, Carol says, “We all feel really fortunate that we’re still around. And to be so close, for me anyway, to be so close in our last years is special.”
