At a recent event at Morningside of Fullerton, future residents heard from Matt Paxton—author, organizational expert, and host of PBS’s Legacy List. He shared insights on managing the sentimental value of personal belongings. His practical advice empowers individuals to preserve their family stories while creating space for a brighter, more joyful future.

Downsizing can liberate you from many of the hassles of homeownership and years of accumulated possessions. You can enjoy a newfound freedom by letting go of what no longer serves you. Paxton offers guidance for decluttering and downsizing while preserving your most cherished memories. He’s outlined the four-step method to letting go below:

Four Steps to Let Go

Step 1: Know Your Finish Line

Define your motivation for downsizing – aka your why.  Identify your final destination – your where. Are you moving to a retirement community or downsizing to a more manageable home? Understanding your ‘why’ and ‘where’ provides a powerful incentive to keep going…even on tough days.

TIP: Knowing your ‘why’ and the ‘where’ will motivate you.

Step 2: Start Small

Begin by dedicating 10 minutes a day to decluttering. This manageable approach helps you establish a routine and prevents you from becoming overwhelmed. These small efforts create momentum that makes downsizing more sustainable.

TIP: Work in the moment, don’t push yourself.

Step 3: Focus on Your Legacy

Create a list of five items that are personally significant to you. This “Legacy List” will help you identify what truly matters, making it easier to let go of less meaningful items. Sharing these stories ensures your cherished memories create a lasting legacy.

TIP: Remember, “The story is the legacy – NOT the item.”

Step 4: Document and Share Stories

Take the time to document the meaning associated with each item. Sharing these stories not only preserves each item’s legacy but also strengthens the connection between generations.

TIP: Tell the stories and the memories live on for generations to come.
